2.11 Student Code of Conduct

1) Overview

  • 1.1 The Code establishes expectations for student behavior on campus, at College-sponsored activities, and in certain off-campus situations where conduct affects a substantial College interest.
  • 1.2 A substantial College interest includes:
    • 1.2.1 Conduct that may violate law
    • 1.2.2 Threats to health or safety
    • 1.2.3 Significant disruption or interference with rights or property
    • 1.2.4 Harm to the College’s mission
  • 1.3 Students are responsible for understanding and complying with this Code and the student conduct process.
  • 1.4 Violations are determined using a preponderance of the evidence standard (more likely than not).
  • 1.5 Students must comply with requests from College officials.
  • 1.6 Official communication is sent to College email, and timely response is expected.
  • 1.7 The College may continue conduct proceedings even if a student withdraws.
  • 1.8 Holds may be placed on student accounts until sanctions are satisfied.

2) Behavioral Conduct Expectations

  • 2.1 Students are expected to:.
    • 2.1.1 Respect the learning environment
    • 2.1.2 Be accountable for their actions
    • 2.1.3 Follow course and program requirements
    • 2.1.4 Act with integrity and professionalism
    • 2.1.5 Uphold College values
    • 2.1.6 Comply with all College policies

3) Behavioral conduct prohibitions

  • 3.1 The following behaviors constitute misconduct (not an exhaustive list):
    • 3.1.1 Alcohol/Drug Misuse: Unauthorized possession, use, or distribution on College property or at College activities
    • 3.1.2 Aiding and Abetting: Assisting or failing to prevent known violations
    • 3.1.3 Battery: Intentional bodily harm without consent
    • 3.1.4 Destruction of Property: Intentional damage to property
    • 3.1.5 Discrimination: Conduct based on protected status that limits participation in College activities (see AP 4.13)
    • 3.1.6 Disorderly Conduct: Disruptive, abusive, or noncompliant behavior
    • 3.1.7 Disruption of Operations: Interference with College teaching, administration, or activities
    • 3.1.8 Failure to Comply: Failure to complete or comply with direction from a College official
    • 3.1.9 Falsifying Information: Providing or using false records or statements
    • 3.1.10 Harassment: Repeated unwelcome conduct creating a hostile environment
    • 3.1.11 Hazing: Endangering acts tied to group affiliation
    • 3.1.12 Technology Misuse: Unauthorized access or misuse of College systems
    • 3.1.13 Obstruction: Blocking movement or access
    • 3.1.14 Retaliation: Adverse action against participants in a complaint, investigation, report or other College process
    • 3.1.15 Stalking: Repeated unwanted contact causing distress
    • 3.1.16 Student Conduct Process Violations: Interfering with or abusing the conduct process
    • 3.1.17 Theft: Taking or using property without consent
    • 3.1.18 Threats: Threatening harm or safety
    • 3.1.19 Unauthorized Access: Improper entry or use of facilities
    • 3.1.20 Violation of Law: Illegal activity

4) Academic Code of Conduct Expectations

  • 4.1 Students must submit work that reflects their own effort.
  • 4.2 Use of artificial intelligence (AI) must comply with course syllabus guidelines

5) Academic Conduct Prohibitions:

  • 5.1 The following behaviors constitute academic misconduct (not an exhaustive list):
    • 5.1.1 Plagiarism or unauthorized collaboration
    • 5.1.2 Use of unauthorized materials or fabricated data
    • 5.1.3 Falsified academic records
    • 5.1.4 Interference with others’ academic work
    • 5.1.5 Cheating on exams
    • 5.1.6 Violations of course or program rules, including AI use

6) Alleged Violations

  • 6.1 Alleged violations of the Code must be reported and adjudicated, including investigation, hearings, and appeals, in accordance with PR 2.11.01 or PR 2.11.02.

7) Sanctions

  • 7.1 Sanctions for any conduct violation may include:
    • 7.1.1 Expulsion: Permanent separation from the College
    • 7.1.2 Suspension: Temporary separation
    • 7.1.3 Conduct Probation: Final warning status
    • 7.1.4 Conduct Reprimand: Formal warning
    • 7.1.5 Restitution: Payment for damages
    • 7.1.6 Other Sanctions: Including loss of privileges, restrictions, educational assignments, or referrals

8) Interim Suspension

  • 8.1 The College may impose an immediate interim suspension if a student poses a threat to safety or operations.
  • 8.2 During an interim suspension, students will be allowed an informal conference with a college official within three business days for the following reasons:
    • 8.2.1 Reliability of the information
    • 8.2.2 Whether their presence poses a threat to safety or operations

9) Appeals

  • 9.1 Students may appeal in accordance with PR 2.11.01 and PR 2.11.02.

10) Additional Information

  • 10.1 Records related to conduct cases are retained for at least seven years and shared only with authorized individuals.
  • 10.2 Students may review records in accordance with FERPA and College policy.

11) Parental Notification

  • 11.1 The College may notify parents or guardians as permitted by law, including for:
    • 11.1.1 Dependent students
    • 11.1.2 Crimes of violence
    • 11.1.3 Alcohol or drug violations involving students under 21
    • 11.1.4 Health or safety emergencies

12) System Statement

  • 12.1 The student conduct process is administrative, not a court proceeding, but is designed to ensure fairness.
