Northern National Art Competition

Nature’s Colors – Digital Collage – Ed Derwent
The Northern National Art Competition is a juried art exhibition co-sponsored by the Nicolet Art Gallery and The Northern Arts Council. Each year, hundreds of artists nationwide submit work to be considered for inclusion. The competition strives to showcase a cross section of contemporary art in a variety of two-dimensional mediums. The art is always both intellectually stimulating and visually exciting. This year’s judge is Scott Stulen, Director and President of the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) Workshop

Nate Wilson is a guy who lives in the woods of Northern Wisconsin and likes to paint and draw stuff. He also works at Nicolet College as the Fine Art Instructor teaching classes like drawing, painting, and watercolor. Nate studied at Laguna College of Art and Design in California where he earned a Master’s degree in Painting. Specializing in representational and figurative work, he paints and draws lots of people, but his art includes a lot of trees, animals, and other stuff too. In recent years, his pictures have included a lot of people wearing space suits, perhaps he is obsessing about the future.
The workshop will be from 10 – noon and then there is an educational critique from 1:30 - 3 pm.
Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP)

Space Suit Painting VI – Oil – Nate Wilson, Rhinelander, WI
Anyone 14 years or older is invited to submit art for this exhibit, which is sponsored by the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association (WRAA) and Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) of the University of Wisconsin. This show is for artists who are not full-time professionals. It is especially designed for those people who are “emerging” artists, or who might not even call themselves artists. The exhibit culminates in a day-long workshop including a lecture or demonstration and an educational critique. Meritorious work selected from the numerous WRAP exhibits around the state will be displayed at the annual state WRAP exhibit.
Nicolet College Art Student Exhibit

Flight – Oil – Stephen Wysocki, Armstrong Creek, WI (Stephen is a fine artist who got his start at Nicolet College)
Nicolet students exhibit their drawings, paintings, ceramics, and photography. The work is the result of a variety of exercises assigned by their instructors. The students are working with foundational principles of art such as composition, contrast, design, color, line, shape, and value. In life-drawing classes, students gain a better understanding of anatomy in order to draw and paint portraits and figures.
Iceland with Craig Pilecky

Sunset on the Black Sands – Photography – Craig Pilecky, Antigo, WI
In 2016-2017, Craig Pilecky, a photographer based in Antigo, made two trips to Iceland to capture its otherworldly Nordic scenery with his cameras. Shooting as he went, he traveled along the island nation’s legendary Ring Road, known for its imposing mountains, active volcanoes, vast lava fields, blue icebergs, and thunderous waterfalls. The photographic record of his journeys will be the subject of both a Nicolet Art Gallery exhibit and an illustrated talk in the Northwoods Center on April 10 at 7:30 pm.
